With the cancellation of public exams and many independent schools reconsidering or simplifying their entrance exams during the pandemic, I am often asked if the demand for tuition has been affected. After all, isn’t the passing of exams chiefly what tuition is for?
At BE, we have not seen any indication that children or parents see this as a chance to ‘slack off’ or as some sort of free pass. What is apparent is that families are desperate for reassurance and are struggling to find a reference point for where their child is doing academically, whether it’s in preparation for their Physics GCSE or for their 11+ Common Entrance.
The last 12 months have been a great testament to the dedication of our schools and teachers in the UK and the resilience of pupils of all ages, many of whom have continued their studies remotely from different countries around the world. But without the daily close attention of a classroom environment, it is clearly a challenge for even the best teachers to be confident of knowing exactly how each pupil is faring.
What this has led to is a demand for even more targeted tuition that truly meets the specific needs of the students and addresses their individual knowledge gaps. BE has always believed that tuition is not a blunt instrument to be used indiscriminately and our Tuition Evaluation Tool has been developed to identify in specific detail where students are struggling in the core subjects of English, Maths and Sciences, from Key stage 1 through to GCSE.
A great challenge when assessing the needs of a child struggling with a subject is to identify exactly where to focus. Although children may have an idea themselves, they may not always be able to pinpoint every element against a long, complex and evolving curriculum. One traditional way of addressing this is through practice papers and noting which questions present the most difficulty. But a typical exam paper may cover as little as 80% of the curriculum and may not provide a full ‘audit’ of a child’s understanding of and comfort with the syllabus.
The aim of BE’s Evaluation Tool is to assess a child against 100% of the syllabus in a fairly short, one off test. The results of this can be used to tailor a tuition plan for the student, specific in content and duration. Perhaps most importantly, the parents will have the benefit of clear and tangible reference points for their child’s targets and achievements.
